I like a band that can keep me guessing, and Avelion is exactly that. Discovered through a YouTube video in the “Related” section, Avelion has been one of my favorite finds in a really long time. The genre is interesting — there’s a solid power metal base, with melodic overtones and a hint of prog and folk. Keyboards abound, but thankfully Oreste Giacomini’s talents are not overused. In fact, Avelion seems a lot less grandiose and ostentatious all-around than other power metal bands, but if anything that just makes them more intriguing.
Avelion has been around in its current form since 2011, when Giacomini and vocalist William Verderi joined the band. A desire to depart from the traditional power metal style influenced the creation of the band’s self-produced debut EP Cold Embrace. Below is the title track, but the EP’s tracks vary enough (and are awesome enough) that you should probably listen to the other ones too.
