TOP TEN GUILTIEST METAL PLEASURES (PART II)

Support: Photo credit: EverydayFamily.org. I wrote about guilty metal pleasures once upon a time, but this time, I wanted to focus on metal STUFF rather than metal TUNES. Metal is more than just the music, so let’s sit back and enjoy the little things that make you cringe and make participating in this big old ridiculous scene interesting/awesome/shameful. 10. Cheesy power metal If Gloryhammer doesn’t bring a smile to your face, congratulations — you are dead inside. I maintain that no one is too kvlt for cheesy power metal, especially when they have a couple of beers in them. It’s just too much fun to resist. 9. Mjølnir pendants Photo credit: Celtic Copper. Not talking about those of you who are Ásatru — talking about people who wear Mjølnir pendants because they like folk metal SO MUCH. I get it, they look cool. When I was in Denmark, I started a conversation with a dude because of his pendant. They are pretty silly though, and they definitely count as guilty pleasures. 8. Singing along at shows Photo credit: Kenneth Author. Apparently there are people out there who not only DON’T sing along at shows, but also dislike when other people do. Ridiculous! Singing along at shows is my Odin-given right! Just TRY to stop me from singing along with “Ramund Hin Unge” when Týr comes around — I will elbow you in the damned neck! 7. Wearing merch for bands you don’t know/like Lord Dying. Anthrax. Warbringer. I have merch from all of these bands. I can name approximately five songs between them. Whatever. I don’t have anything prove...

POWER METAL IS THE CAFFEINE OF MUSIC

POWER METAL IS THE CAFFEINE OF MUSIC

Support: I am very, very, very tired. THIS TIRED. Believe it or not, I don’t spend all of my waking hours writing articles while sipping mango margs in my PJs. I have a day job, and my day job involves doing the work of several people, some of whom aren’t even in my department. Then I come home late and try to write something fun for you all to read before collapsing onto my laptop. Most of the time I’m successful! You know what helps? Power metal! Attractive shirtless yelling men: power metal at its finest. Listen. Ignore the fact that it is 11pm. The fact that I’m even remotely awake right now is due to the awesomeness of power metal. It screams you awake, even if it doesn’t necessarily make you productive. It’s Red Bull for your ears, and it won’t make your heart explode (citation needed). If you are like me and need to stay awake just long enough to wrap up a project, just remember this weird old tip from an over-tired metalhead like myself: put some power metal in your playlist. I leave you some suggestions without further comment, because power metal is merely the CAFFEINE of music and not the cocaine. Good night! Support: Have you seen these yet? Top Ten Heavy Metal Anthems of All Time

Support: One day, when I was sitting in my room listening to old school metal, I realized that there are quite a few songs from that era that are about how awesome metal is. Granted, metal WAS extreeeeemely awesome back then, so I can see why a bunch of people would be inspired by the environment around them, even if it’s kind of masturbatory to write odes to your own greatness. At any rate, I decided to compile a top ten list of all my favorite heavy metal anthems, partly because I love writing op-eds but mostly so that I had an excuse to sit around and listen to a bunch of old school metal all day. 10. Twisted Sister, “You Can’t Stop Rock & Roll” Now you can ride it high And you can light the way Lift up your hands in praise You can’t stop rock and roll Everyone knows “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” but this lesser-known Twisted Sister jam is way more appropriate to the list and more fun, if I do say myself. Technically this is not a heavy metal anthem, since rock ‘n’ roll and heavy metal aren’t quite the same thing, but the spirit is there and I like the song a whole lot. 9. Diamond Head, “Lightning To The Nations” I’m gonna set you down I’m gonna make it right I’m gonna bring it home I’ll bring you lightning to the nations Though Diamond Head took a few questionable musical turns after their debut album, some of the greatest metal bands of all time cite them as an influence. The first...
