RANDY RHOADS – A LEGEND GONE TOO SOON – FROM THE VAULT

Support: This Thursday marks the 33rd anniversary of Randy Rhoads death. Randy, who died in 1982, was on his way to Orlando, Florida for the next stop on the Ozzy Osbourne, Diary of a Madman tour. After driving most of the night, the band stopped to visit friends and ended up going for a joyride on a small engine plane piloted by tour bus driver Andrew Aycock. Rhoads who was afriad of flying went only because seamstress / hairdresser Rachel Youngblood had a heart conditon and Aycock promised he wouldn’t do anything risky. Randy also loved photography and wanted to take some aerial photos. Aycock tried to startle the sleeping members on the tour bus and flew the plane extremely close to the bus twice. The third trip however proved to be fatal. The plane crashed and burst into flames killing 25 year old Rhoads, Youngblood and himself. Randy began his foray into music forming a cover band at 14 called Violet Fox, with his brother on drums playing classic songs by The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper and David Bowie during performances at a local music school. After Violet Fox broke up, Randy formed The Whoreand they began playing  over the next several months at backyard parties in LA. At 16, Randy and best friend Kelli Garni, who he had taught to play bass, formed Quiet Riot and started playing bars and clubs around LA including two of the most popular in that era: The Whisky a Go Go and The Starwood. While they were creating a buzz, Quiet Riot was only able to sign a Japanese recording contract with CBS/Sony who released Quiet Riot and Quiet Riot II in Japan only. In 1979, during an interview with a magazine, Ozzy Osbourne mentioned that he was looking...
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY “CATACOMBS OF THE BLACK VATICAN”

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY “CATACOMBS OF THE BLACK VATICAN”

Support: I’ll never forget my introduction to Zakk Wylde.  I was a 21-year-old engrossed in the metal scene.  My band was having a party, like we did nightly, and the TV was on Headbanger’s Ball.  Yes, for you youngsters out there, MTV used to actually play music videos! The video for “No More Tears” came on, and we were blown away!  Who was this young guitar virtuoso?  Ozzy Osbourne has a reputation for having only the best play in his band, and Wylde was up to the task!  Playing for Ozzy for the better part of 20 years, he has laid down some of his best work with the Prince of Darkness, even while creating some of the most dangerous riffs with his then-side project, Black Label Society.  As the years went by, Wylde shifted more and more attention to BLS, and in 2009, he decided to make it his only band.  He released Order of the Black in 2010 and has been touring incessantly since then.  Catacombs of the Black Vatican will be his first album in four years, and it is the definitive Black Label Society album. As a musician, Zakk Wylde is known for many things:  blistering solos, heavy-as-hell riffs, piercing vocals, and the feeling and emotion reminiscent of the first three Led Zeppelin albums.  Although he follows the same basic formula of his past releases, the continuity and flow of Catacombs is excellent. “Fields of Unforgiveness” opens up the album, and Wylde revs up the riff machine and gets it rolling down the track.  His vocals are as piercing as ever, and the solo is killer.  “My...

OZZY EXPLAINS INSPIRATION BEHIND “GOD IS DEAD?”

OZZY EXPLAINS INSPIRATION BEHIND “GOD IS DEAD?”

Support: Yesterday the heavy metal world stood still for nine minutes at 3pm(EST), and it was because of two words…Black Sabbath. The legends unleashed the first single off of “13“(Coming On June 11th) and the response was HUGE! Fans all over the globe shared this song with each other, and with all of the insanity going on in the world right now, for nine minutes yesterday everything was okay! That’s the beauty of music! So what is “God Is Dead?” all about? Where did Ozzy get his inspiration from? The Metal God spoke to Zane Lowe’s BBC show about where the lyrics came from, “How I got that title was I was in somebody’s office and there was a magazine on a table and it just said, ‘God Is Dead,’ and I suddenly thought about 9/11 and all these terrorist things and religion and how many people have died in the name of religion. When you think about the tragedy that’s happened throughout time, it just came in my head. You’d think by now that their God would have stopped people dying in the name of, so I just starting thinking that people must be thinking, ‘Where is God? God is dead’ and it just hit me. At the end of the thing, there’s still a bit of hope because there I sing that I don’t believe that God is dead. ” Listen to “God Is Dead?” again below! All hail Sabbath! PARANOID ABOUT THE NEW BLACK SABBATH ALBUM?

PARANOID ABOUT THE NEW BLACK SABBATH ALBUM?

Support: With the News that Black Sabbath will be releasing a new album, the reaction from metal heads the world over has been mixed. Some fans greet this news with excitement, wanting to here a new Sabbath album, seeking to cap off a varied album collection. Other fans are not so thrilled. Me? Not so thrilled. The last time I saw Ozzy perform was on Ozzfest 2003 in Atlanta. The build up had been immense,  the crowd all waiting for the man of the hour to take stage and show every band that played before that day just exactly where they came from. Unfortunately, the only thing this fan witnessed was an awkward and long set that only pushed me to say to my friends, “You think he’s going to hurt himself? I hope not. Oh… he’s doing the monkey move again, someone kick him, I think he’s stuck in a loop.”  To feel that way was not something I was proud of, am proud of now, but to say I felt any different would have been an absolute lie. That was nearly a decade ago. I understand that there is something special about seeing living history, about making it easier to pass down that history and say to your kid, who you are introducing to metal, “See him? I saw them 35 years ago, and they played this very song.”  That is a powerful thing, and it is a thing that few other genres can boast, but… Most of the time,  it’s not good. There are few bands that can pull off relevant work this late in their careers. Metal bands...
WHO IS THE KING OF METAL? (PART TWO)

WHO IS THE KING OF METAL? (PART TWO)

Support: Well, I can honestly say “WOW” when I think about all the responses we got to this.  [IF YOU MISSED PART ONE, GO HERE: http://snblnk.com/253 ] Some were dumb, some were pretty awesome, and some were right that I had spelled Tony Iommi‘s name wrong reducing my credibility to the size of a pea. I’ve fixed it and now you’ll never know the difference!! That said, some of you suggested more ‘greats’ to add to the list. Some people also made the point which I was making to my friend in the initial conversation that sparked this search in the first place, that you really can’t crown just one individual and call them the ‘King of Metal’. I think Alice from the L’amour the Rock Capitol of Brooklyn states this sentiment pretty well and titles the forefathers pretty well, “If Halford is GOD, and Ozzy is a prince, then who [is] King? Ummmm…” and then, “I put my vote in for Dio.” You can’t really say one without justifying some others. It’s impossible! One thing I CAN do for sure is knock some names out of this list. First I’ll start by telling some people why their suggestions don’t work. Geoff Tate… I get why he would be suggested but when I think of metal as a whole and think who is the king of it I definitely don’t imagine Geoff Tate sitting on the throne. Royalty? Definitely. King? Not in my opinon. Phil Anselmo was also suggested. Again, someone with powerful metal representation but he is easily outshined by Dimebag and that’s a fact. In the Thrash Til...
